Our Board members have the broad experience and specialist coal knowledge that can pivotally influence the operations of our Client’s. This team has let Mastermyne through major expansion and have been integral in Mastermyne’s steady growth.

Mastermyne’s Executive line-up has been brought together to build a team that is like-minded in its approach while contributing a diverse set of complementary skillsets.

The Mastermyne Executive team have created a positive and productive working environment that maximises production output, minimises project disputes, maintains a strong focus on safety and promotes up skilling across all staff. Each manager has demonstrated their commitment to our culture of ownership and accountability for HSEQ. Their performance in this area is core to the wellbeing of our people. They take pride in delivering timely, cost effective solutions to our clients. This management team, combined with its skilled workforce, underpins the future growth of the organisation.

Tony Caruso
Managing Director & CEO

Tony has more than 20 years’ experience in mining services working on major underground mining projects across QLD and NSW before moving into management roles. He has worked alongside several mining services contractors and has a comprehensive understanding of the sector. Tony’s qualifications are a combination of a trade background with a degree in Business Management from the Central Queensland University.

Tony’s propensity for Project Management drives Mastermyne’s focus for safe and productive projects. He is highly regarded for his innovative approach to solving complex issues and for actively turning issues into opportunities.

Known for being strategic as well as results-focused, Tony has presided over a period of significant growth in the Mastermyne business. He is responsible for recruiting and developing a strong management team who are seen as high performance leaders. This team, under Tony’s leadership, has come together to deliver exceptional results.

Vivienne Gayton

Viv joined the Mastermyne team in 2010 after holding management roles in a variety of organisations. As the Executive General Manager- Human Resource she is responsible for HR strategy and risk management, including sustaining secure and flexible industrial relations platforms to support the group’s operations and growth strategy.

She holds undergraduate qualifications in Human Resources and postgraduate qualifications in Risk Management, Industrial Relations and an MBA from Deakin University.

David Sykes

In 1978 David began his career in the UK where he worked in various project, operational and statutory roles. These roles included operator, deputy, overman and under-manager. David holds a Mine Managers Certificate, Under-Managers Certificate and Deputy Certificate for the UK.

Since his arrival in Australia in 1996 David has gained his 1st and 2nd Class Managers Certificate in NSW and 1st Class Managers Certificate and SSE in Queensland.

David’s operational and senior management roles include, Longwall and Development Co-ordinator and Mine Manager at Dartbrook Mine, Mine Manager at Kayuga and the combined Dartbrook Kayuga Operation, Mine manager at Central Colliery and Moranbah North Mine, and SSE/ GM at Moranbah North Mine. Most recently David was Operations Manager with Leighton Mining and was responsible for two surface coal operations and underground coal interests.

David holds a Diploma in Mining and Mechanical Engineering; he is a registered Chartered Engineer and a Member of the Australian Mine Managers Association and the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Tony was a founder of 4Sight Training Solutions Pty Ltd which was acquired by MyneStart in 2012. Tony has extensive experience in the coal mining industry, including open cut and underground. While his background lies in site based training services for the resource sector Tony has more recently been at the forefront of designing and presenting a range of on-site and off-site training solutions that are targeted, innovative and unique to the resources sector.

Tony has been instrumental in shaping the needs of training in the Queensland resource sector through his role at the Queensland Mining ITAB and the Mining Industry Skills Centre. He remains on various boards and committees that continue to shape best practice in the resource sector.

Colin Bloomfield

Colin brings to the Company over 30 years of mining experience in technical, operations, management and corporate roles. He is also an experienced Company Director having been in various Directorships for almost twenty years. Colin’s former roles during his 27 years with BHP Billiton include President Illawarra Coal (8 years), Vice President Health, Safety and Environment (Global role) and Project Director for the BHP Billiton merger integration as well as member of the deal team for the transaction. He was also an Underground Coal Mine Manager both in New South Wales and Queensland.

Currently Col is Chairman of the Flagstaff Group and Destination Wollongong and a Director at Community Alliance Credit Union and Wollongong Golf Club. He has previously been a Director at the Minerals Council of Australia and Chairman of the NSW Minerals Council and Port Kembla Coal Terminal.

Patrick McCoy

Patrick has been with the Group since December 2014 and has been working in the industry for over 20 years with experience in both open cut and underground coal operations.

A Fitter by trade Patrick has worked for major mining companies including BMA and Anglo and on mining projects with contract service providers across QLD and NSW and has held senior management roles with several contract service providers in the Underground Coal Sector.

Wayne Price
Executive General Manager Mining NSW

Wayne has 30 years’ experience within the Underground Mining Industry. Throughout Wayne’s career he has held various senior management roles including Executive General Manager, Director, Mining Consultant and General Manager.

Wayne’s area of expertise include the implementation of leading strata management practices, Implementation and management of material risk controls and reviewing mining performance & improvement opportunities.

Andrew Watts

Andrew co-founded Mastermyne in 1996 and has been involved in contracting within the mining industry since 1994.

From 1996 -2005 Andrew was responsible for all aspects of Mastermyne’s operations until the appointment of Tony Caruso as CEO.

Peter Green
General Manager Mastertec
  • Management Team

Reporting to senior leadership teams or at Board level, for the past 28 years, Peter’s career has covered a broad range of leadership roles across operational, manufacturing and logistics accountabilities within the Australian building, manufacturing products and resource sectors.

From 2008 to 2016, Peter held the position of Chairman of the Port Kembla Port User Council, concurrently with his earlier role as the General Manager of Port Kembla Coal Terminal (PKCT), transferring bulk commodities from rail and road to ship. His commercial experience and efforts at PKCT delivered selection and definition studies, public expression of interest, use or pay agreement(s), access protocols, capacity management procedures, ACCC application preparation; and final commercial framework and funding mechanism to allow the execution of a $328M Restoration and Compliance Project at PKCT.

Peter joined the Mastermyne Group as NSW Operations Manager – Mastertec in May 2017 and was appointed to the position of General Manager Mastertec in June 2018. Peter has a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wollongong.

Gabriel (Gabe) Meena

Gabe is an executive with over 30 years experience in the steel, mining and stevedoring industry covering operations, maintenance and engineering. Gabe has held senior operational and management roles with Bluescope Steel as General Manager Mills and Coating, Bluescope Steel China as President China Coated and BHP Collieries as General Manager of a number of coal mines. Gabe’s most recent role was General Manager Operations with Patrick Terminals.

Gabe has a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Julie Whitcombe
Non-Executive Director

Julie brings over 16 years of experience across financial, strategic and operational roles, with a focus throughout her career on the resources sector.  Julie is currently Executive General Manager for the Queensland operations of Senex Energy Limited, an ASX-listed upstream oil and gas business.

After completing a first class honours degree in mining engineering, Julie spent seven years working for pwc, a global financial services firm.  Her clients during this time spanned a range of high profile businesses and equity and M&A transactions, including QGC, Santos and Rio Tinto.

Joining in 2010, her roles at Senex have included Chief Financial Officer, Executive General Manager of Strategic Planning in addition to her current role which is focused on the development and operation of coal seam gas projects in Queensland.

Julie’s broad background allows her to bring a unique combination of experience in financial accounting and equity markets and a focus on business-led strategy and growth.
