In October 2010 Mastermyne opened a world first underground mining training facility located in Mackay Queensland. Myne Start - as it is known - is a simulation of an underground coal mine which has been designed to introduce inexperienced
personnel into the underground coal mining industry through accelerating the skills development and operational readiness.
This is not your average training program. You can't 'book in' to undertake the Myne Start training like you would with a regular training organisation. Prior to being offered a place in the training course you must complete our recruitment process. The Myne Start training programs are a pathway into the mining industry and not just a training program.
There are a variety of training programs and pathways offered through Myne Start:
All training courses are based on a user pay program and upon successful completion participants will be guaranteed a fulltime fixed-term position at one of the sites Mastermyne operates at in the Bowen Basin. As part of the program participants will engage in both practical, hands on training as well as classroom based learning.
Inexperienced Mineworker Training Program:
Myne Start recreates the conditions of an underground mine like no other and participants will be engaged in highly interactive training, primarily focused on work based activities that demonstrate and reinforce learning in areas which include:
- Hazard identification & risk management
- Strata Management
- Ventilation Management
- Surface Mine Operations
- Safe Working at Heights
- Underground Lifting and Slinging
- Mine Services
- Unaided Escape
- Underground Emergency Response
- Vetter Airbag
Course Fee:
- $1650 (incl. GST) non-refundable registration fee to be paid 2 weeks prior to commencement of training for the inexperienced mineworker course.
- $12,100 (incl. GST) course fee: salary sacrificed back to Mastermyne over a 46 week period.
- The course fee covers the following components:
- All Underground PPE (including uniforms and boots)
- Standard 11 (including statement of attainment)
- Working at heights
- Underground lifting and slinging
- Apply first aid
- 4 week program
- Week1: Monday to Friday 7:00am to 5:00pm
- Weeks 2, 3 & 4: Monday to Thursday 6:00am to 6:00pm
Inexperienced Underground Mine Electrical Course:
The Inexperienced Underground Mine Electrical course is run to allow qualified electricians to gain industry knowledge, skills and competencies. It is a prerequisite that participants hold their Queensland electrical fitter and electrical mechanic licence. Electricians will gain practical skills and knowledge in areas including:
- Hazard identification & risk management
- Isolation principles
- Lifting and slinging

- Personnel & equipment interaction
- Unaided escape (emergency exercise)
- Surface mine operations
- Conveyor electrical installation
- Code 'C' on Driftrunner and Eimco
- Standard 11 surface and underground (includes statement of attainment)
- Working at Heights
- EEHA Competencies (Hazardous area)
- Underground lifting and slinging
- Apply First Aid
- LVR & CPR
Course Fee:
- $1950 (incl. GST) non-refundable registration fee to be paid 2 weeks prior to commencement of training for the inexperienced underground mine electrical course.
- $12,100 (incl. GST) course fee: salary sacrificed back to Mastermyne over a 26 week period.
- The course fee covers the following components:

- 4 week program

Recruitment Process:
To gain a position in the course applicants will go through a recruitment process that includes an Assessment Day held at the Myne Start training facility in Mackay. Candidates for this Assessment Day will be shortlisted based on our selection criteria and our current staffing needs at each mining site. Candidates who successfully pass through our recruitment process, including recommendation post-Assessment Day will be offered a position on an up-coming course and offered a fulltime fixed-term position with Mastermyne Pty Ltd. More specific details regarding the cost of the course as well as the working hours are provided above.
Participants are responsible for their own living expenses including; food, transport and accommodation during the course.
